How to Get to Monument Valley: Distances, Airports & Routes

People ask me how far the airport is, and I have to explain there isn't one, not really. Monument Valley sits on the Navajo Nation straddling the Arizona-Utah line, hours from any city, and the emptiness is exactly what makes the drive in feel like arriving somewhere. The last hour on US-163, with the buttes growing in the windshield, is part of the experience. So the honest answer to "how do I get there" is almost always: you drive, and you plan the drive well.

How do you get to Monument Valley?

Nearly everyone reaches Monument Valley by car. It has no commercial airport and no rail service, so you fly into a regional or major airport, rent a vehicle, and drive. Common approaches are about 7.5 hours from Las Vegas, 3 hours from Flagstaff, 2 to 3 hours from Page, and 2.5 to 3 hours from Moab. A rental car is not optional out here.

Because the park is Navajo Nation land rather than a National Park with a town at the gate, there is no shuttle network and public transport is close to nonexistent. Most visitors fold Monument Valley into a wider Southwest loop, arriving from Page and Antelope Canyon, from the Grand Canyon, or from Moab and the Utah parks. How far is Monument Valley from the main gateway cities?

From Las Vegas it is roughly 400 miles and 7.5 hours. Flagstaff is about 175 miles and 3 hours. Page, near Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, is about 2 to 3 hours. Moab, gateway to Arches and Canyonlands, is roughly 150 miles and 2.5 to 3 hours. Those four cover the vast majority of arrivals.

What is the nearest airport to Monument Valley?

There is no major airport near Monument Valley. The closest regional fields are Page Municipal (about 2 to 2.5 hours) and Flagstaff Pulliam (about 3 hours), both small and usually reached by connecting through Phoenix. For a wide choice of direct flights, most travelers use Las Vegas, Phoenix Sky Harbor, or Salt Lake City and drive in. Rental cars are available at all of them.

Flagstaff sits closest of the airports with any service, roughly 175 miles out, but its flights typically route through Phoenix, so flying there rarely saves time over renting in Phoenix and driving. Weigh the numbers before you book.

Should you fly or drive to Monument Valley?

You will do both. The question is only where you rent the car. Fly into a major hub like Phoenix, Las Vegas or Salt Lake City for cheap, frequent flights and a longer drive, or a regional field like Page or Flagstaff for a shorter drive but pricier, connection-heavy flights. Either way, you finish the trip behind the wheel. Pick the airport that balances flight cost against drive time for your route.

Once you land, the driving is straightforward paved highway right up to the entrance, so a standard car handles the approach fine.

What should you know about the drive itself?

The paved highways to the entrance are easy in any car. Inside the park, the 17-mile Valley Drive is unpaved: dirt, washboard and deep sand that takes 2 to 3 hours and bans motorcycles and RVs. Fill up in Kayenta, Page or Mexican Hat, because fuel and services thin out fast, and mind the Navajo time zone. Plan fuel and time, not just distance.
